About the qualification

This course aims to help plumbers and heating engineers install Vented and Unvented Domestic Hot Water Storage Systems to comply with the appropriate Building Regulations and Standards. It has been developed to enable plumbing and heating engineers to demonstrate their competence in the:

  • Design, installation, service and maintenance of vented and unvented hot water systems;
  • Understanding of vented and unvented hot water system design and installation requirements as they relate to building and water regulations.

You will also cover methods of temperature control in open and unvented hot water systems.

Who is it for

The course is aimed primarily at practicing plumbing and heating engineers who have an understanding of the fundamental requirements of hot and cold water systems and central heating systems or students who are nearing completion of a plumbing and heating vocational qualification at level 3.

Qualification objective

The objective of this qualification is to help you develop the skills and knowledge required to design, install, service and maintain a vented and unvented hot water system.

What will you achieve.

By the end of the course you should be able to…

  • Understand the requirements of Section G3 of the Building Regulations relating to the design, installation, service and maintenance hot water system and how to comply with the regulations.
  • Identify typical faults associated with the installation or maintenance of hot water systems.
  • Understand the requirements of Part 1 of the Building Regulations detailing Conservation of Fuel and Power as they relate to the design, installation and services and maintenance of hot water systems.
  • Understand the application of Part P of the Building Regulations in relation to the installation of hot water systems.
  • Undertake a range of assessment tests to confirm your competence in the installation service and maintenance.

Requirements

Trainees must hold a recognised trade qualification, be working towards one or have evidence of a number of years’ experience in the plumbing or heating industry.

Progression routes

Upon successful completion you will be able to either join a Competent Persons Scheme allowing Self Certification of installation of unvented hot water storage systems, or to notify the Local Building Control Department prior to commencing work.

How you will be taught

Your tutor will take you through the key knowledge requirements based on the course manual. Once you have attained sufficient supporting knowledge to cover he requirements of hot water systems, your tutor will demonstrate the key operating principles of a live system and take you through the essential installation and commissioning requirements.

Further information

Because of the changes to G3 and the implications to vented systems, the course now includes vented systems as well as unvented systems. It will be simply referenced as ‘hot water storage systems’.

Certificates are normally valid for 5 years. On expiry, candidates are eligible to take re-assessment. The re-assessment can be taken up to 6 months prior to the expiry date of the initial qualification without losing out (MOT Style). Previous certificates must be presented to the assessment centre as evidence of holding the initial qualification.
